Health workers in Sharjah are being trained to strengthen the medical profession’s support for children who are victims of violence and abuse. The classes, run by the Kanaf Child Protection Centre, which opened last month, aim to teach doctors, nurses and other staff skills to help young patients open up about their problems. done The first of the three stages of training involves teaching health workers how to ask the right questions to elicit sensitive information from children. In some cases, this information may be shared by family members or other people they know. They are taught to ask the Socratic questions that therapists and counselors typically use to help get to the root of any potential problem to elicit instinctive rather than rehearsed answers. The method is named after the Greek philosopher Socrates and aims to encourage deep thinking and emotional exploration.
